Artful Friday- Hot Air Balloons

We have been making hot air balloons.

My class (painting and drawing 4-6 yrs old) have been having a great time studying the art of hot air balloons. It’s been a bit of a longer project than I normally do. We are into the third class with this project, and we are almost to the end.

Class One:

We started out with sketches of what the balloons would look like with just pencil. Those who finished early, added some color.

We then used two pieces of construction paper, one for our sky/background, and the other color for the air balloon. We drew our balloon again and cut it out and glued it to the sky/background. We then took oil pastels and added clouds, birds , whatever the dreamed.

Materials needed: paper, pencil, two colors of construction paper, scissors, glue, oil pastels

Class Two:

The next step, making paper mache balloons. We took a foam ball ( we could have used a balloon, but since my students are younger I opted for something more stable), and then we covered it with news paper.

Materials Needed: Foam ball or balloon, newspaper, paper mache glue or flour and water

Class Three

Here is a sample, of one of my students , she was the first to finish. I’ll show more as the rest of the students finish, they are so magical.

Materials needed: paint, string, buttons, glue
